Movies I think People Should See: “Alien”

So, here it is. Why are you surprised? I said I’d do it. I’m beginning this series with a firm favourite of mine. I first saw this movie a few years ago, even though I’d been wanting to see it years before that. It’s one of the best movies around and it will always stick with me until I die [hopefully].

‘Alien’ – 1979

“In space, no-one can hear you scream.”

‘Alien’ is one of the best movies of all time, and one of my most favourite movies ever. A dark, claustrophobic horror set in the vacuums of space? Yes. When I first saw this movie it gave me chills all the way through, especially in scene regarding the air vents.

I won’t go into detail in case you haven’t seen ‘Alien’ [Shame on you.] but that one scene is where the ‘claustrophobic horror’ is at it’s height. So, if you don’t know, a ship floating in space receives a distress call which awakens its passengers from hyper-sleep. They investigate and one of their crew gets impregnated by an unknown alien which then ‘hatches’ over breakfast in a explosion of blood and gore. The alien grows quickly and proceeds to start killing the other passengers. So you can add ‘survival’ to that list of genres I mentioned.

Sporting a cast which includes Sigourney Weaver and John Hurt [!!] the film also has a great script and impressive sets that, while not being sleek and shiny like most spaceships are, still gives the feeling that the movie is set in the future. Which it is, by 200 years or so.

The titular Alien in the movie is one of the coolest villains in any media, by far. Acid for blood? An almost pneumatic tongue with extra teeth? Pure awesome. There aren’t many enemies who can say that they could kill by bleeding. It could get a paper-cut and doom everyone on the ship! This added to it’s sleek design and colour scheme [all black] means it is perfectly designed for hiding in shadows and jumping out at people. Which it does a few times. It’s good for making the viewers jump in fright, or surprise, whichever helps the ego.

It has spawned a great sequel [‘Aliens’] which expanded on the series so much, even though it was far more action-oriented. However, it also spawned terrible sequels. I’m looking at you ‘Alien 3’ and ‘Resurrection’. In my opinion they should have either stopped at ‘Aliens’ or made better sequels, but that’s another topic of discussion.

In summation, the breakfast scene, the air vents, and the climax are the best parts of this movie. Everything else just adds to the greatness. If you’re a fan of sci-fi movies, or horror movies, or are just looking for a -good- movies to watch, I highly recommend ‘Alien’. And ‘Aliens’. But not the others.

Also, there’s a delightful cat called Jones for you animal lovers out there.
